MEDIEVAL TUSCAN VINTAGE CAR RENTAL
San Gimignano
SAN GIMIGNANO, this village's cultural and natural heritage have been recognized by the UNESCO, but even more impressive is the medieval skyline made up of the 14 remaining towers and the views from above and below them. San Gimignano rises on a hill and dominates the Elsa Valley with its towers which date back to the 11th century. The town increased in wealth and developed greatly during the Middle Ages thanks to the "Via Francigena" the trading and pilgrim's route that crossed it. On 8 May 1300, Dante Alighieri came to San Gimignano as the Ambassador of the Guelph League in Tuscany. Once in San Gimignano, other than admiring the famous towers, you can also see the "Duomo" or Collegiate Church, the "Palazzo del Popolo", the "Palazzo Nuovo del Podestà" (which is now the town hall), S. Agostino Church, the Museum of Holy Relics, and the infamous Museum of Torture, which displays early instruments of torture.
Monteriggioni
MONTERIGGIONI, Except for some work done in the 16th century, very little work has been done to Monteriggioni's walls or buildings since they were first erected. These are the best preserved examples of their kind in all of Italy, so it is not surprising that they attract buses full of tourists, but also architects, medieval historians and archaeologists.
Siena
SIENA, The city like other Tuscan hill towns, was first established in the time of the Etruscans (c. 900 BC to 400 BC) when it was inhabited by a tribe called the Saina. The Etruscans were an advanced people who changed the face of central Italy through their use of irrigation to reclaim previously unfarmable land, and their custom of building their settlements in well-defended hill-forts. Then, around year 70 AD, at the time of the Emperor Augustus, a Roman town called Saena Julia was founded in the site. Today Siena is famous worldwide for its medioeval history of which it preserves – in addition to the buildings and architecture – one of the most exciting and celebrative events: The “Palio”, a wild horse race with cavaliers in medieval costumes in the marvelous oyster shape main square following a major colorful middle-age parade opened by dozens of flag-wavers.
Montepulciano
MONTEPULCIANO is one of the highest hilltop towns in Tuscany. It is encircled by walls wherein the streets are crammed with Renaissance-style buildings and churches. The town is also very well known for its local wine "VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO". The main monuments in MONTEPULCIANO are: the DUOMO, the PALAZZO COMUNALE and the church of the MADONNA DI SAN BIAGIO.
Pienza
PIENZA is a picturesque town, the birthplace (1405) of Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini (Italian: Enea Silvio Piccolomini), a Renaissance humanist, who became Pope Pius II. He had the entire village rebuilt as an ideal Renaissance town. Intended as a retreat from Rome, it represents the first application of humanist urban planning concepts, creating an input for a planning that was later adopted in other Italian towns and cities and eventually spread to other European centers.
The rebuilding was done by Florentine architect Bernardo Gambarelli (known as Bernardo Rossellino) who may have worked with the humanist and architect Leon Battista Alberti, though there are no documents to prove it for sure. Alberti was employed at the Papal Curia at the time and served as an advisor to Pope Pius II. Construction started around 1459. Pope Pius II consecrated the Duomo on August 29, 1462. You can visit the main sights as the DUOMO, the PALAZZO PICCOLOMINI, and the PALAZZO COMUNALE.
Montalcino
MONTALCINO is situated on the top of a hill, and has very narrow, winding and steep streets, typical of Tuscan villages.
Montalcino's foremost activity is wine producing, as evident from the number of shops where you can buy the excellent "BRUNELLO".
The FORTEZZA was built by Cosimo I De’ Medici in 1571, and you can walk on the ramparts and look at the spectacular view over the countryside.
The PALAZZO VESCOVILE, the PALAZZO COMUNALE and the DUOMO are the other monuments worth to visit in MONTALCINO.
Cortona
CORTONA is a small but fascinating city in the province of Arezzo, Tuscany, Central Italy, situated on a hill commanding and overlooking Lake Trasimeno. Its cyclopean walls, still in great part preserved, are said to be 3000 years old. It was one of the twelve cities of Etruria and in its vicinity many Etruscan ruins and tombs may be seen. Cortona took part in all the wars against Rome until 310 B.C. when Fabius Rullianus defeated the Etruscans and took Cortona and Perugia. Cortona and Tuscany are the subject of several highly readable books by Frances Mayes. These books give a highly authentic impression of life in this part of Italy. One in particular, titled “Under the Tuscan Sun” was made into a popular movie.
